When strolling around Little Tokyo, visitors will notice artworks on display in a variety of windows. These 10 artwork installations at different businesses, stores, and organizations throughout the community showcase the Windows of Little Tokyo public art project initiated by Sustainable Little Tokyo.
Sustainable Little Tokyo (SLT)
Sustainable Little Tokyo is a community-wide campaign led by the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center, Little Tokyo Community Council, and Little Tokyo Service Center. SLT is committed to ensuring that the neighborhood, culture, and importance of Little Tokyo continues to thrive in the ever-changing metropolis of Downtown Los Angeles. This year, the 2nd Annual Windows of Little Tokyo project transforms the neighborhood into an outdoor art exhibition by partnering local sites and artists to convey visions of the future of First Street North.
First Street North
The fight for First Street North is an ongoing community campaign aiming to gain control of the block located behind the businesses on First Street and bordered by Judge John Aiso Street, Temple Street, and Alameda Street. An area critical to the past, present, and future of Little Tokyo, the hope is for First Street North to be developed for and by the community. Windows of Little Tokyo 2019 conveys these hopes by presenting images of what could be if the community were to obtain this control.
Windows of Little Tokyo x The J. Morey Company
As a business located on this historic and important piece of land, we volunteered to be a project partner site and were paired with local artists, Angelica Villegas & Jen Cienfuegos. Their artwork intertwined a vision of First Street North and our company history into a beautiful image blending the past, present, and future. Hopes for residential development atop booming local and family-owned businesses are illustrated in the artwork as well as a tie to The J. Morey Company family history. You can learn more about our company and family history on our “About Us” history page.
We are honored and excited to be a participant in the Windows of Little Tokyo 2019 project. Stop by our Little Tokyo Office and check out our window display to see the artwork for yourself!
