This “winter” has been windier than most and for me, my skin is as dry as it’s ever been. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been trying to find some remedies to aid my cracking skin. Here are a few that have been extremely helpful:
- Petroleum Jelly/Vaseline
My elbows are extremely dry as it is and with this weather they are even worse. I have found that putting petroleum jelly/Vaseline on before I take a shower is really the only thing that helps them. The steam and warm water from the shower really help the jelly penetrate the dry skin and moisturize beneath just the surface. This can also be used on your legs, arms, back, etc. but be careful about putting this on your face because it can really clog your pores.
- Shorter, Cooler Showers
Long, hot showers are so satisfying during the winter time but they can actually strip your skin of its moisture because hot water strips the protective oils from your skin. Another option is to shower less to keep from stripping your skin of those oils.
- Oily Soaps
Brands like Dove, Oilatum, and Neturogena contain added fat. This is beneficial to your skin because of the oily film it leaves whereas deodorant soaps can be extremely drying.
- In-Shower Body Lotion
Using an in-shower body lotion can really help to relieve your dry skin. It works with the warmth and humidity of your showers to help soothe your skin.
- Moisturize Immediately
As soon as you get out of the shower apply lotion to trap moisture in the upper layers of your skin.
