A Mother’s Day Adventure

Every year in May we celebrate Mother’s Day, a day set aside for honoring our mothers, grandmothers, and other mother-like figures in our lives. This special day is quickly approaching and we have limited time to put together a spectacular day to show our moms how much we truly appreciate them. Yes we could spoil them with breakfast-in-bed, an afternoon tea, and lavish gifts of course. But the weather has been so beautiful as of late and there are so many wonderful sites to explore in Southern California! Here are five budget-friendly, more adventurous things to do this Mother’s Day:

1. Griffith Observatory (Los Angeles, CA)

From Tuesday through Friday from noon until 10 PM and Saturday through Sunday 10 AM until 10 PM admission to the building and grounds is always FREE. The observatory has telescopes, exhibits, and live shows in the planetarium, not to mention the amazing view of LA and the Hollywood Sign.

2. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (San Pedro, CA)

This aquarium has a varied collection of sea creatures and admission is FREE. It is also directly across the street from the Cabrillo Beaches and the Cabrillo Beach Coastal Park (tide pools).

3. Point Dume State Beach and Nature Preserve (Malibu, CA)

Point Dume Nature Reserve is a 32 acre plot of oceanfront land from which you can access several hiking trails. The main trail leads to a summit or stairs that take you to the private beach, Pirates Cove.

4. Niguel Botanical Preserve (Laguna Niguel, CA)

The preserve is a short 4 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The garden itself sits on 18 acres of hillside with a beautiful display of plants collected from five areas of the world. The trails are a little more intense due to the steepness but there plenty of rest stops along the way.

5. Abalone Cove Shoreline Park (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA)

This shoreline park has 2 beaches (Abalone Cove and Sacred Cove), tide pools,
viewing areas, trails and the most spectacular views of the ocean as well as
Catalina Island. This location is perfect for an all-day outdoor adventure!

All in all, Mother’s Day is about telling those special women in our lives how much we appreciate them and all they have done for us. It is not about showering them with gifts, but showering them with love, because after all they deserve that.
