Neighboring our Little Tokyo office is a small sushi restaurant called, Toshi Sushi. It is owned by first-generation Japanese native, Toshihiko Seki, known to most as Toshi.
Born in Shinagawa, Tokyo, Toshi grew up in Japan and came to the United States after graduating from high school. He always knew that he wanted to come to America and moved to California (San Diego) in 1982. He has also lived and worked at various Japanese restaurants in San Diego, New York City, Hartford (CT) and Los Angeles.
Toshi learned the art of sushi making from his uncle in Japan. His uncle owned a sushi bar, where he worked throughout high school. While working there, Toshi learned all the basics of making sushi and managing a restaurant. After working at a few Japanese restaurants in the U.S., Toshi opened a restaurant with a business partner in Hartford, CT called Toshi Japanese Restaurant.
After living in Hartford for several years, Toshi decided to move back to California (this time to Los Angeles). When a friend told him about a vacant restaurant space in Little Tokyo, he decided to open a restaurant of his own, and in 2008, Toshi Sushi opened on E. 1st Street.
Toshi loves his customers. When asked what he likes best about having his own restaurant, he responded by saying that he likes seeing repeat customers come back. Sometimes they move away, but he loves it when they come back to visit him.
Toshi hopes to one day open more restaurants or branch out from sushi and introduce a sake bar to Los Angeles. He also hopes that you will come visit his restaurant in Little Tokyo and enjoy his unique, traditional Tokyo-style sushi.
