According to the Los Angeles Times, a couple went out for an afternoon of shopping. They did not expect to become heroes that day once they witnessed a gunman attack 36-year-old Officer Jeremy Henwood.
The husband and wife took action quickly. "There's an officer shot. There's an officer shot. He's still breathing," the woman said through the radio. A San Diego police dispatcher asked the caller for more information and then broadcasted the situation, bringing dozens of law enforcement personnel to the scene. The woman's description of the gunman's car allowed police to track down the criminal, Dejon Marquee White, 23. When he refused to surrender, grabbing his shotgun, several officers opened fire, killing him, police said.
When Police Chief Bill Lansdowne announced on Sunday that Henwood had died, he praised the woman who had used the car radio to alert police to the shooting. He also gave thanks to her husband, who desperately tried to provide first aid to stop the bleeding. "Those were true heroes," Lansdowne said.
In a letter Henwood wrote before his untimely death, he states: "Life is full of risks…No matter how careful a person is, there will always be something that wasn't planned for."
